THEY SET OFF FOR THE Lakes on the following morning, Darcy’s coach in the lead, and Bingley’s following. The plans was that Monsieur St Aubert’s party would join Darcy in his coach, and the Bingley’s would travel in theirs, but in the event, Valancourt was forced to travel with the Bingley’s.

It appeared that there had been some disagreement between Valancourt and Monsieur St Aubert, who resented the way that Valancourt had insinuated his presence into their party. Of course, as they were all guests of Mr Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam (who had gone straight on to Keswick), he could hardly insist that Valancourt be excluded.

That arrangement pleased Darcy all the more, for he could have Emily St Aubert all to himself. They talked on a variety of subjects: France compared to England, the Pyrenees compared to the Pennines, the Classics and Modern Literature, the Fine Arts, and the Politics of Europe. On every subject, Emily proved to be well informed, and St Aubert often joined in with dissertations of his own. These were somewhat tedious to Darcy. It was not that they were very different from Emily’s responses, but the words seemed more meaningful when they were delivered by lovely lips, and emphasized by winning smiles, animated nods, the raising of a well-shaped eyebrow, or the glance of eyes flashing with ardour.

They were many hours on the Great North Road – a road that has been busy ever since it was first built by the Romans eighteen centuries ago. It was only when they turned towards the North East at Scotch Corner that the scenery became interesting, and the conversation naturally turned to scenic descriptions in literature. Thompson was mentioned, then Wordsworth, and even Mrs Radcliffe, whose descriptions of the Pyrenees could applied to the scene before them. Miss St Aubert, after dismissing Constable again, praised some of the other English landscape artists, particularly the watercolourist, Cotman. Darcy, fortunately, was in his element here, as he had a fine art collection at Pemberley to which he added on regular occasions.

“I think you would also appreciate Gainsbrough,” he said. “Indeed, I have a fine example in my collection. Perhaps you would care to visit Pemberley on our way back from the Lakes and you can see it for yourself.”

Emily gave him one of her ardent flashes. “I should so love to do that – that is, if papa is agreeable.”

“It will be my pleasure,” said St Aubert. “You know how much I believe in the improving power of great art.”

“Do you have any Salvator Rosas in your collection?” said Emily.

“Also no,” said Darcy.

“He is all that is sublime and picturesque,” said Emily. “Indeed, looking at his paintings is the next best thing to being there in person.”
